Speeches and toasts at the wedding reception
Traditionally, the bride's father's speech is first.
He is called on by the MC or the best man to propose a toast of health and success to the bride and groom. He normally also welcomes the groom's parents and the other guests, and says a few words about his daughter.
The bridegroom replies on behalf of himself and the bride. First, he thanks his parents for the start they gave him in life, and for their good wishes for his marriage. He normally concludes by proposing a toast to the bridesmaids.
The best man responds on behalf of the bridesmaids. Although the other speeches may include an amusing anecdote, it is the best man's speech that should particularly entertain the guests. In fact, the ability to deliver an entertaining speech is a major criterion for choosing the best man.
Whatever wedding speech you have to deliver, we can supply a pack of ready made speeches for you to use.
A cautionary word - don't ‘steal’ other speakers' material!
- Their traditional toasts
- Their primary subject
- It is quite ok to drift a little, but if you drift too far, there may seem to be nothing left for the other speakers to say. Conversely, you may find that another speaker has said some of what you want to say!
- Father of the Bride = his daughter
- Groom = his new wife and her family
- Best Man = the groom
- There is some benefit to comparing the all speeches – before the big day – if this is possible and agreeable to the other speakers. They may with to preserve an element of surprise in their big performance, but a quick run-down of points covered could be beneficial.
